I’ve lived all over Ottawa throughout my life — from growing up in Hunt Club, to spending my teen years in Barrhaven, living downtown, and eventually moving back to Ottawa South.

And beyond the places I personally lived, I've spent a lot of time exploring everywhere from Orléans to Kanata and pretty much every neighbourhood in between.

Once upon a time, I decided to uproot my city girl life and move from Toronto to a tiny town in Ontario. We’re talking tiny, like a population of 5,500, tiny.

I know, wild right? But I had my reasons. First of all, Gananoque (where I moved to) is one of the prettiest places I've ever visited in Ontario. Second, I was in desperate need of a change. And while Toronto has a lot of perks, I was ready for a new chapter.

After spending most of my life living in Toronto, I decided to pack up and move at the start of 2025. It wasn't a decision I made lightly — most of my friends and family still live in the city, which is what kept me anchored there in the first place. But there came a point when I decided I wanted to try living somewhere new, so I moved abroad.

Once I left, there were a lot of things about Toronto I really missed. But leaving also really shed some light on things I’m glad to have some distance from.

Linguistics, accents and maple syrup aside, there are many deeply Canadian behaviours, personality traits, and cultural delusions Americans may never understand.

As a freelance writer who has been working remotely for the better half of a decade, I finally decided to take advantage of my work-from-anywhere perks and move abroad. While Canada is amazing in so many ways, I’d lived there for the majority of my life, and it was time for a change.

I ended up choosing France as my home base, specifically Marseille, which is in the south. I didn't know much about the city when I got there, but once I stepped out of the train station and into the beautiful chaos that is Marseille, I fell in love immediately. And although I get homesick from time to time, there’s no way I’m going back to Canada anytime soon — and here’s why.
